Description
The tour lasts between 2 to 3 hours, depending on the size and pace of the group, and starts at Calçada das Virtudes. We continue walking towards the panoramic views of the Miradouro da Vitória, passing through the old Jewish quarter and climbing up to the Monastery of São Bento da Vitória.
The next stop is the former Prison and Courthouse, followed by the Clérigos Tower, the Baroque jewel of the city! The journey continues past the Lello & Irmão Bookstore and on to Gomes Teixeira Square, where we can admire the churches of Carmelitas Descalças and Carmo, the hidden house (the narrowest in Porto!), and the University of Porto’s Rectory.
As you progress along the route, you’ll learn more and more about the city’s history and the logic behind its growth. Take advantage of the break to decide where you’d like to end your tour: at the Cathedral, also known as the Sé do Porto, perched atop the granite hill of Pena Ventosa, or at the Ribeira, overlooking the Douro River.
Continue the journey towards the heart of the city, the Avenida dos Aliados, admiring the old banks from the imperial era, the Porto City Hall, and the old Imperial Café (now a McDonald’s, reputed to be one of the most beautiful in the world!). The next stop is São Bento Station, where more than 20,000 hand-painted tiles by artist Jorge Colaço depict key events in the formation of the Kingdom of Portugal.
From here, you can choose to climb up to the Sé or descend to the Ribeira via the artistic Rua das Flores, lined with sculptures, tiles, and graffiti for all tastes. Along the way, take in Infante Square with its iron-era buildings like the Palácio da Bolsa and the Mercado Ferreira Borges, as well as historical landmarks such as the Casa do Infante.
This tour concludes in the Ribeira, one of Porto’s oldest neighborhoods, where the ancient Fernandina Wall once stood, and where the city’s first port operated.
