What locals really eat

If you want to eat like someone who lives in Sao Paulo, get beyond the big churrascarias and try a bar boteco on a Saturday afternoon. Spotting a place packed with locals sipping on draft beer and sharing petiscos (small snacks) is an easy way to choose. One of my favorite haunts is Bar do Luiz Fernandes near Bixiga. The feijoada served there on weekends isn’t just food , it’s like a Saturday gathering with old friends.

Also, keep an eye out for regional dishes from the north and northeast of Brazil. Sao Paulo attracts folks from all over the country, so you’ll find places like Mocotó serving up baião de dois and carne de sol that taste like home for the people who actually live there. It’s a nice break from the usual meat and rice, and perfect if you want to surprise your palate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about eating Brazilian in Sao Paulo? Here’s what you want to know.

For a traditional feijoada, check out Bar da Dona Onça or Bolinha in Pinheiros. They serve it on Saturdays and Sundays, usually with the classic trimmings. It’s filling, so come hungry!
Some churrascarias are pricey, but places like Fogo de Chão or Vento Haragano actually serve amazing meat with a good vibe. If you want something more local and less touristy, try smaller botecos that grill meats on the weekend.
Mocotó in Vila Medeiros is my go-to for northeastern cuisine. The flavors are deep and honest, and the atmosphere feels genuine, not like a staged experience.
Brazilian food tends to be meat-heavy, but São Paulo’s restaurants often offer classic dishes without meat like farofa, panela de legumes, or baba de moça desserts. Just ask locals or the staff for recommendations.
Botecos are casual and perfect for quick bites and beers. Don’t expect fancy plates, think croquetes, pastel, and tapioca snacks. Goiânia’s bar in Pinheiros is a good example with friendly service and honest prices.
